Columbia Methodist Episcopal Church

Methodist preaching began in Columbia, N.J. as far back as 1831. In that year, Columbia and Hainseburg were taken in as part of the Hope circuit under the charge of Rev. Jacob Hevner and Rev. Caleb Lippencott. The original building was erected in 1839 by Nelson Lake of Easton, PA. The land was purchased drom William and Mary Green for the sum of $100. The original Board of Trustees to whom the land was conveyed in trust were; D. Silverthorn, A. Ryman, J. Faunce, J. Lisk, S. Snoover, I. Angle and W. Hillyerd. The Union Church occupied the building for about 2 years but on November 14, 1841, it was dedicated by presiding Elder Walter Burroughs as a Methodist Methodist Episcopal Church. Due to the state of disrepair, it was decide that a new building was needed. After farewell services on July 27, 1902, preached by Rev. A. L. Smith of Suffern, N.Y. and Rev. J. L. Hayes of Verona, N.J., the church was torn down. The corner stone was laid and dedication services were held on October 1, 1902. The sermon was preached by Rev. B. M. Neil of Easton, PA. The congregations of both the Columbia and the Hainesburg Meythodist Churches have merged as one and alternated the services between churches on a monthly basis. Rev. Daniel Kantenwein was the present clergyman as of this writting in 1975.
